Chandra Chouhan, a graduating student from the University of Wisconsin–Madison, has made significant strides in mobilizing South Asian voters through her organization, "Chup! Go Vote." Chouhan's upbringing in a politically engaged household inspired her to address the historically low voter turnout among South Asians in the U.S.

In an interview, Chouhan shared her motivation, stating, "Growing up, a big part of my life was watching the news, talking about issues at the dinner table, and seeing my parents vote." She emphasized the nonpartisan nature of her organization, focusing on voter registration and participation rather than endorsing specific candidates.

Under Chouhan's leadership, "Chup! Go Vote" successfully mobilized over 1,500 South Asian voters during the 2022 midterm elections. By collaborating with existing community groups and leveraging resources like translated voter guides and educational initiatives, the organization effectively engaged South Asian communities across the country.

Looking ahead, Chouhan's initiative is set to provide $10,000 in grants to South Asian student organizations for civic education initiatives at universities nationwide. This move aims to bridge the gap in connecting with and mobilizing young voters within the South Asian community.

Apart from her work with "Chup! Go Vote," Chouhan's involvement in the South Asian Civic Alliance and as a fellow for the Center for Interfaith Dialogue reflects her broader commitment to community engagement and inclusivity.

Khush Patel, a co-founder of the organization, praised Chouhan's leadership, saying, "Chandra is a born leader," highlighting her passion and drive in expanding the organization's impact beyond Wisconsin. Ulrich Rosenhagen, the interim director of the Center for Interfaith Dialogue, commended Chouhan's efforts in promoting awareness and acceptance, noting her dynamism and grace in working towards dispelling division and ignorance.

Chouhan's dedication to amplifying South Asian voices and fostering civic engagement serves as a testament to the impact of grassroots initiatives in empowering underrepresented communities.
