In a recent article published on May 1, 2024, Brelynn Bille, a graduating student from the University of Wisconsin–Madison, has been highlighted for her outstanding dedication to disability rights advocacy and campus accessibility.

Bille's determination and fearlessness in advocating for disability rights were evident when she took matters into her own hands after facing accessibility challenges in the workplace. She famously stated, “If I have to continue to maneuver through barriers because someone else didn’t put away supplies, you will, too.”

Throughout her time at the university, Bille has been a vocal advocate for students with disabilities, with faculty member Michael Maguire praising her remarkable grit and unwavering commitment to justice and kindness for all individuals.

One of Bille's significant accomplishments was her pivotal role in establishing the Disability Cultural Center on campus, providing a vital space for students with disabilities to connect and find community. Reflecting on the center's impact, Bille shared, “It’s so nice to hear that they are finding community right away. When you have a space where you can collectively come together and bring that identity with you, it can change everything.”

Beyond campus initiatives, Bille's advocacy extended to the state level, where she successfully advocated for the proclamation of July as Disability Pride Month in Wisconsin, showcasing her ability to mobilize support and effect meaningful change.

Bille's tireless efforts have not gone unnoticed, with Helen Rottier, the program coordinator at the Disability Cultural Center, commending her for bringing people together and amplifying diverse perspectives. Rottier also emphasized the importance of Bille's work in promoting disabled joy and pride.

As Bille prepares to graduate with a bachelor’s degree in community and nonprofit leadership, she remains focused on leaving a lasting impact on the university community. With plans to pursue a career in disability advocacy, Bille aims to continue breaking down barriers and fostering inclusivity in all aspects of campus life.

In her own words, Bille expressed her ultimate goal, stating, “More than anything — and this is super cheesy, I know — I genuinely want to leave UW–Madison better than I found it when I came here.”

Brelynn Bille's unwavering dedication to improving campus accessibility and championing disability rights serves as an inspiration to her peers and a testament to the power of advocacy in creating a more inclusive and supportive academic environment.
