Last week, the Clerk’s Office distributed absentee ballots for the June 17 Special Election. This election will fill the District 1 seat on the Dane County Board of Supervisors. Voters intending to return their absentee ballots by mail are advised to do so promptly. The Clerk’s Office emphasized that “absentee ballots received after Election Day cannot be counted.”

Voters must ensure their absentee ballot envelope is properly prepared. It should be sealed, signed by both the voter and a witness, include the printed name of the witness, and contain the witness’s address.

The state mandates that voters return their own ballots. However, under the Voting Rights Act, individuals with disabilities may receive assistance in mailing or delivering their ballot from a person of their choice. This helper cannot be an employer, an agent of an employer, or a union agent.

Once voters have returned their absentee ballot, they are not permitted to vote at polling stations on Election Day. For those needing additional time to complete their absentee ballot, a secure drop box is available outside Fire Station 1 at 316 W. Mifflin St., accessible daily until Monday, June 16.
