Stephanie Kressin has been a pivotal figure in the University of Wisconsin–Madison’s Bucky’s Classroom program, an initiative aimed at introducing seventh-grade students across Wisconsin to the concept of higher education. Over her five-year tenure, Kressin has visited 256 classrooms in more than 100 schools, impacting 6,863 students.
The program encourages early consideration of college among students who might not otherwise have thought about it. “At the end of the day we are planting a seed that one day will grow,” said Kressin, who is transitioning from her role to become a school psychologist. She emphasized that this seed could lead to various paths including college, career opportunities, or community involvement.
Bucky’s Classroom is part of UW Connects programming and involves UW students acting as ambassadors. These ambassadors visit seventh-grade classrooms to share their experiences and introduce students to college-related vocabulary. Fran Puleo Moyer, associate director of outreach programs, praised Kressin for her dedication and impact on the program.
Kressin began with Bucky’s Classroom as a sophomore and advanced to become a coordinator overseeing ambassadors and connecting with schools. She has mentored over 100 ambassadors and adapted the program for virtual settings.
“The visit is split up into three main sections: debunking myths about college, college vocabulary and career exploration,” explained Kressin. The aim is to familiarize students with potential future paths before they reach high school.
Feedback from teachers suggests that these early discussions are effective in shaping student perspectives on education. “I wish I had access to know where all these seeds have gone but I know from talking to teachers and seeing the students at the end of the lesson, we know we are making a difference,” Kressin stated.
Reflecting on her journey with Bucky’s Classroom, Kressin expressed personal growth through her involvement with the program. “Starting as a sophomore, I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life,” she shared. “Bucky’s classroom has really changed my life in so many ways.”
