The City of Madison is monitoring the effects of ongoing heavy rain as a flood watch remains in effect through Monday morning, August 11, 2025. City officials report that there is still a risk of flash flooding and urge residents to remain alert. Areas already affected by street flooding include the intersection of East Johnson and Fourth Streets, as well as Lexington Avenue and Stoughton Road.

“Flashing flood can occur anywhere throughout the City when the stormwater infrastructure cannot convey the amount of water that is falling,” according to city officials.

In preparation for these storms, engineering crews have focused on cleaning storm sewers and grates at priority locations to help ensure that stormwater systems operate efficiently.

“As a reminder, please do not drive in standing water. This can be a serious safety hazard. Please avoid parking on streets that are prone to flooding during this flood watch,” officials stated.

City authorities note that certain areas in Madison, particularly on the Isthmus, have historically experienced flash flooding during periods of heavy rainfall. However, they add that storm drains typically catch up after several hours and water levels recede. The city cautions that with multiple storms over the weekend, additional rainfall may occur before existing water has fully drained from previous events.
