The City of Monona announced on May 5 that it has started the process to update its Comprehensive Plan for 2026, which is required by the state every ten years. The city will host a public workshop about the plan on May 13 at 6 p.m. at the Monona Community Center.

The comprehensive plan is important because it sets long-term goals and policies for how Monona will grow and develop in the future. The updated plan will build upon the work completed in the city’s previous comprehensive plan from 2016, reflecting new needs and priorities as they arise.

According to city officials, the updated Comprehensive Plan will describe current community conditions and outline Monona’s desired future. It will present background information such as land use patterns, natural features, transportation systems, economic conditions, and population trends. The document aims to identify key issues facing Monona today while highlighting opportunities for improvement.

The city said that establishing goals and policies for responsible growth is a central part of this effort. The plan also proposes where development should occur in coming years and what it should look like through a new Future Land Use Map. Additional recommendations are expected regarding housing, sustainability, public health, natural resources, transportation networks, community facilities, and economic development.

Community involvement is described as essential during this planning process. Residents are invited to attend the May 13 workshop or participate through an online survey available on the project website starting that day. Business owners and other stakeholders are also encouraged to share their perspectives.

For more information about participating in upcoming engagement opportunities or learning more about the Comprehensive Plan update itself, residents can contact Doug Plowman, Director of Planning and Economic Development.
