The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is currently investigating a boat explosion that occurred on the Mississippi River near Prescott in Pierce County on Saturday, July 26. According to the DNR, the incident resulted in all 11 passengers being ejected from the vessel into the river.

Authorities reported that there were no fatalities as a result of the explosion. All individuals who were on board were recovered from the water, and eight of them required medical treatment at a nearby hospital.

Preliminary findings from the investigation indicate that the operator of the boat made two unsuccessful attempts to start the engine. The explosion took place during a third attempt to start it. Efforts to put out the resulting fire began immediately after, but during these efforts, the vessel drifted and made contact with another boat, causing fire damage to both vessels. The fires on both boats were eventually extinguished.

The DNR stated that “the incident remains under investigation. No other information is available at this time, and DNR staff are unable to accommodate interviews on this specific incident.”

Officials have encouraged members of the public interested in learning more about boating safety to consult resources provided by the department online. More information can be found at this DNR webpage: https://dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/boat.

At present, authorities have not released further details about possible causes or contributing factors beyond what has already been shared. The investigation is ongoing as officials work to determine what led to the explosion and how similar incidents might be prevented in future boating activities.

Anyone seeking additional guidance or updates regarding safe boating practices is advised to regularly check official state resources for up-to-date recommendations and information.
