Eastside Elementary and Prairie View Middle were named on April 28 as two of the first schools in Wisconsin to receive the Purple Star School designation, according to an announcement from the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction.
The new recognition highlights efforts by schools to support students and families connected to the military. Military-connected children often move frequently, which can create challenges as they adjust to different school systems and requirements.
To qualify for this three-year designation, schools must appoint a liaison for military families, provide staff training on related challenges, offer activities that help build social connections among military students, celebrate their contributions, and make online resources available. “We are grateful for our Military Family Liaison Shelley Joan Weiss for her dedication and hard work to help our schools achieve this recognition,” Interim Director of Communications and Engagement Perry Hibner said.
Other recognized schools include Grantsburg High School, Osseo-Fairchild Elementary, Sparta Montessori School, St. Croix Falls Elementary/Middle/High Schools, Tomah Middle/High School, LaGrange Elementary, Miller Elementary, Warrens Elementary, Wyeville Elementary, Tomah Area Montessori, Camp Douglas and Oakdale Elementary Schools as well as Lemonweir Elementary.
State Superintendent Dr. Jill Underly announced the designations during a Month of the Military Child celebration in Tomah. Dr. Underly also thanked Weiss for her leadership in administering the Interstate Compact on Educational Opportunity for Military Children—a program aimed at easing transitions between states for children whose parents serve in the military. “Commissioner Weiss is a passionate advocate for military-connected children and works diligently to ensure compliance with rules and regulations,” Dr. Underly said. “I thank her for her leadership and helping us better serve military children across Wisconsin.”
