This summer marks the launch of Freedom Schools in the Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD), a program introduced in collaboration with the Children’s Defense Fund. This initiative represents the first Freedom Schools site in Wisconsin, aiming to enhance literacy and cultural identity among students.
Inspired by the 1964 Mississippi Freedom Summer, Freedom Schools focus on empowering students through education and community involvement. “From the very first day, our students showed up eager to learn, sing, read and participate,” said Sarita Foster, Community Schools Manager. The program fosters a sense of pride and belonging among participants.
Each day at Freedom Schools begins with Harambee, a Swahili term for “let’s pull together.” This morning ritual includes songs, affirmations, and community guest read-alouds. Books shared are culturally relevant and foster connections between readers and students.
The curriculum emphasizes reading, encouraging students to express themselves through various creative means. “They’re encouraged to reflect in a way that feels right to them,” noted Sonia Spencer, MMSD Senior Coordinator of Strategic Partnerships.
Servant Leader Interns guide classroom activities under the supervision of licensed coordinators. These interns are part of MMSD’s Grow Your Own to Associate Degree program aimed at nurturing future educators within the district. “They see adults who look like them leading the room and that matters,” Foster added.
Afternoon sessions offer diverse enrichment activities allowing students to explore art, music, science, and more. The program also invites parents and community members to engage by volunteering or participating in events.
“This is something special,” Spencer remarked. “It’s more than a summer program; it’s a joyful celebration of who our kids are and who they can become.”
Currently serving around 50 students, Freedom Schools will continue until July 31 with plans for future expansion.
