The Village of McFarland announced on March 23 that a herbicide treatment will be conducted at the Farwell Lagoon near Severson Road and US Highway 51 as part of an ongoing storm water maintenance project. The treatment is scheduled for Tuesday, March 24, and aims to prevent tree stumps from resprouting after recent removal work.

The use of herbicides is necessary because not all stumps could be removed mechanically during the grubbing process. To address this, Heartland Ecological Group will apply a chemical solution directly to the remaining stumps. The application will utilize Trycera (Triclopyr acid) mixed with Impel Red oil-surfactant penetrant in a ratio of 25% Trycera to 75% Impel Red.

According to the announcement, “Herbicide use will be limited to direct application to stumps only.” This approach is intended to minimize environmental impact by restricting chemical exposure solely to targeted areas within the lagoon site.

Residents are advised to avoid the area during and for at least 48 hours following the treatment period. This precaution is meant to ensure public safety while allowing time for the chemicals to take effect.

The storm water maintenance project reflects ongoing efforts by local authorities and contractors like Heartland Ecological Group to manage vegetation in sensitive aquatic environments while maintaining compliance with safety guidelines.
