Madison Area Technical College announced on Apr. 8 that it will launch a one-year Barber Technical Diploma program this fall, with enrollment now open for classes beginning Aug. 31.
The new program aims to address the growing demand for barbers in the region by offering students a fast and affordable pathway into the industry. Lightcast labor market data projects that barbering jobs in the Madison College district will increase by 10.1% between 2025 and 2030, surpassing the national growth rate of 6.7%.
Jeff “JP” Patterson, Madison College Barber Program Director and barbershop owner, said, “Barbering is a booming industry in Wisconsin with many opportunities for new graduates. A barbering career is promising for individuals ready to learn and put in the time to master the trade.”
The full-time diploma can be completed over two semesters and includes both classroom instruction at the Truax campus and hands-on training at local barbershops and salons. Students will learn hair cutting, styling techniques, shaving, beard design, skincare services, chemical services as well as business and time management skills necessary for success in the field. Tuition is set at $4,422 plus additional costs—lower than many private programs—and financial aid is available for eligible students.
“We are excited to grow this program and support students as they pursue meaningful, in-demand careers in barbering,” said Dr. Beth Giles, Madison College Provost.
According to the official website, Madison Area Technical College extends its educational reach across south-central Wisconsin with state-of-the-art facilities designed to mimic workplace environments for practical training. The college is affiliated with the Wisconsin Technical College System and offers more than 190 associate degrees, technical diplomas, certificates, apprenticeship programs—including online options—and study abroad opportunities.
The Barber Technical Diploma Program meets Wisconsin licensure requirements following changes that separated barbering from cosmetology licensing requirements statewide. Graduates who earn licensure may work as barbers or grooming specialists or advance into business ownership or management roles.
Dr. Jennifer Berne served as president of Madison Area Technical College alongside collaboration from the District Board of Trustees according to the official website. The application deadline for prospective students is Aug. 15.
