Madison Area Technical College announced on April 29 that its trade apprenticeship students have received $228,000 in Ascendium Tools of the Trade grants. The announcement coincides with National Apprenticeship Week, which runs from April 26 to May 2.

The funding aims to help apprentices pursue training in high-demand fields such as electricians, industrial electricians, plumbers, machinists and telecommunications VDV installer technicians. Each of the 114 students received up to $2,000 for expenses like tools, equipment, clothing and tuition. The grant is intended to lower financial barriers so students can focus on their education and career advancement.

Dr. Jennifer Berne, president of Madison Area Technical College, said: “Apprenticeships create real opportunities, giving students a direct path to in-demand careers while helping employers build their workforce. Ascendium’s support removes financial barriers so more of our students can succeed and contribute to Wisconsin’s economy.”

Ascendium has provided over $8.8 million in scholarships to more than 5,000 apprentices across Wisconsin during the past thirteen years. Keith Witham, President and CEO of Ascendium said that apprenticeships are an important option for learners seeking direct paths into good jobs and that these scholarships help ensure states can be successful with such programs.

According to the official website, Madison Area Technical College extends its educational reach across south-central Wisconsin and features state-of-the-art facilities designed for practical training that mimics workplace environments. The college is affiliated with the Wisconsin Technical College System according to its official website. It offers more than 190 associate degrees, technical diplomas, certificates and apprenticeship programs—including online options—according to its official website.

The scholarship awards come at a time when interest in apprenticeships is rising statewide. According to the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development’s most recent biennial report referenced by Madison Area Technical College’s release, enrollment reached record levels for a third consecutive year in 2025.

Berne served as president alongside the District Board of Trustees according to information from Madison Area Technical College. She concluded: “Ascendium’s support removes financial barriers so more of our students can succeed and contribute to Wisconsin’s economy.”
