Madison College student develops 3D model for city’s Triangle Redevelopment Project

Madison College civil engineering student Sergio Perez contributed to the City of Madison’s $300 million Triangle Redevelopment Project by developing a 3D model display. The initiative, titled “Taking Shape, Our Triangle,” is focused on creating hundreds of affordable and modern homes in downtown Madison.

City officials approached Madison College to involve students in the redevelopment project. Perez worked for six months on the 3D model while maintaining his full-time coursework. He used software tools common among architects and engineers, working at Madison College’s STEM Center. The center provides resources such as 3D printers and other fabrication equipment for students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics programs.

The collaboration gave Perez experience with stakeholder communication and hands-on product development. Dr. Kit Carlson and Tom Fleming from the STEM Center advised him throughout the process.

“He was committed to making this piece remarkable, giving back to the city he grew up in,” says Dr. Kit Carlson.

On August 13, Perez presented his model at the project’s groundbreaking ceremony. Heather Stouder from the City of Madison Department of Planning & Community & Economic Development noted that it was positive to work with Perez due to his creativity and attention to detail.

“My favorite part was seeing him interact with CDA Triangle residents, elected officials, and others, using the model to help everyone gain a better understanding of this major multi-year project to significantly improve and expand affordable housing in this part of Madison’s downtown,” Stouder says.

Several dozen people attended the event where Perez’s work was displayed.

“I am grateful for this opportunity and thank the City of Madison, and all the support I received from Madison College faculty and staff, and the valuable resources from the STEM Center,” Sergio says.
