Student-athletes in the Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD) began their fall high school athletics season on August 5, with practices for football, cheer, and pom starting first. Other sports will begin over the following two weeks. The start of the season marks a period of teamwork and academic development for hundreds of students.
Key dates for the beginning of various sports include girls golf on August 11, girls swim and tennis on August 12, and boys and girls cross country, volleyball, and boys soccer on August 18.
Jeremy Schlitz, MMSD’s athletics director, commented on the significance of these programs: “Our student-athletes continue to impress us not just with their athletic talent, but with their dedication, leadership and impact on our school communities. Fall sports are more than a tradition in Madison; they’re an essential part of how we build relationships, resilience and a sense of belonging for our students.”
Research indicates that participation in high school athletics is linked to higher GPAs, better attendance records, and stronger graduation rates compared to non-athlete peers. Athletics also help students develop time management skills, set goals, and build social connections.
Schlitz added: “Sports provide an unparalleled opportunity for students to grow in confidence, in character and in connection with their school. Whether they’re suiting up for varsity or trying something new at another level, we want every student to feel like they have a place in our programs.”
To participate in any sport this fall season, MMSD students must have a valid sports physical documented by the district. Free physical clinics are available at all four comprehensive high schools throughout August. Students can contact their school’s athletic office to schedule an appointment.
Clinic dates include East High School on August 6 and 20; La Follette High School on August 7-8 and again on August 21-22; West High School on August 18; Memorial High School on August 19.
This year’s athletes will use upgraded facilities that were completed last year after voters approved a capital referendum in 2020. All four comprehensive high schools received renovations including turf fields, tracks, tennis courts, gymnasiums, and training spaces as part of MMSD’s commitment to safe athletic environments.
“Our goal is to ensure every student has access to modern spaces that support physical activity, teamwork and excellence,” Schlitz said. “The community’s investment in these facilities is an investment in our students, and we’re proud to see it paying off.”
