The Streets Division is collaborating with Sustain Dane to offer the Recycle Better course online, starting on July 2, 2025. This will be the final opportunity to participate in this course for the year.

The Recycle Better course aims to educate participants on effective recycling practices and their importance. Upon completion, attendees can become Certified Recycling Stewards, enabling them to share their knowledge within their communities. Since its inception in 2021, over 1,300 individuals have taken part in the course, extending their outreach to more than 100,000 people.

The course consists of two sessions. The first session will occur on July 2 from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm, followed by a second session on July 9 at the same time. Further details are available on Sustain Dane’s registration webpage and the Streets Division’s website.

Sustain Dane charges a $15 tuition fee for the course. However, those for whom cost is an issue can contact Sam Worden at Sustain Dane for possible tuition waivers.

Recycling correctly is crucial as improper items in recycling carts can lead to fires in Madison recycling trucks and increase costs related to waste management. Moreover, incorrect items pose risks to workers at sorting facilities.

Recycling rules vary by location and may cause confusion due to differing guidelines across states and misleading information online. Fortunately, Wisconsin has specific recycling mandates that residents can follow.

Residents interested in aiding their community’s recycling efforts are encouraged to take the Recycle Better course. City of Madison provides free resources such as magnets and guides through its Streets Division website and offers copies of the Recyclopedia booklet at local libraries.

For more information about Madison’s recycling program or Sustain Dane’s offerings, individuals should visit their respective websites.
