The Madison Police Department participated in National Night Out this week, engaging with thousands of residents across the city. The annual event is designed to foster stronger relationships between police and the communities they serve.

In Madison, two events were held in each of the six patrol districts. Additionally, a larger gathering took place at Warner Park before the Madison Mallards baseball game on Tuesday. Officers joined community members for grilling, games, and other activities aimed at building connections.

“We all wear a uniform with a badge, but we are also human beings. Most of us become first responders to help people, but we also want to give back to our community,” said Madison Police Captain Diana Nachtigal, who leads community outreach for the department.

Attendees had opportunities to meet with various specialty units from the department, including Mounted Patrol, the K9 team, Mental Health Unit, and Special Weapons and Tactics Team.

National Night Out is typically observed on the first Tuesday in August nationwide as an initiative to encourage police-community engagement.

“Public safety is a community effort. The best way to make our city safer is by getting to know our neighbors,” said Madison Police Acting Chief John Patterson.
