The Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD) has announced a partnership with Improve Your Tomorrow (IYT), a national nonprofit organization focused on supporting young men of color in their pursuit of higher education. The collaboration will bring mentoring, academic support, and culturally responsive programming to select MMSD schools during the 2025–26 and 2026–27 academic years.
IYT’s primary goal is to increase the number of Black male students who complete college degrees. The organization employs a model that centers on building long-term relationships with students, reinforcing their connection to school, and helping them view themselves as future college graduates and professionals.
“We see this as a direct investment in a demographic of our high school students who have historically been underserved,” said Mary Jankovich, MMSD’s executive director of college, career and community readiness. “IYT’s approach provides the mentorship and support that help students envision themselves as college graduates and leaders in their communities.”
The nonprofit operates its College Academy program over several years with distinct phases: establishing relationships and belonging in the first year; focusing on attendance and positive behavior in the second; and emphasizing measurable academic growth in the third. This structure allows for tracking student progress over time and aims to achieve lasting outcomes.
“We know that students thrive when they feel connected, affirmed and supported,” said Dr. Carlettra Stanford, MMSD’s assistant superintendent of schools and learning. “IYT’s programming is designed to create those conditions while also addressing key drivers of student success, from attendance to academics. It’s a holistic model that aligns with our district’s goals.”
Beyond mentoring and academic assistance, IYT offers enrichment activities such as exposure to college campuses and leadership development opportunities. These experiences are intended to build confidence among students, expand their networks, and prepare them for life after graduation.
MMSD chose IYT after reviewing evidence from other districts where participants showed increased engagement, higher graduation rates, and greater enrollment in postsecondary education. The district will collaborate closely with IYT to monitor outcomes annually at no cost to families.
