The Middleton-Cross Plains Area School District has introduced an electric bus to its school transportation fleet, aiming to reduce emissions and operational costs while supporting its sustainability goals.
“The bus itself is much quieter, and there are no emissions for kids to inhale,” said MCPASD Transportation Manager Mike Hamstra.
According to Hamstra, diesel buses typically consume between 2,500 and 2,800 gallons of fuel annually. In comparison, the new electric bus will use approximately 35,000 to 40,000 kilowatt-hours per year. The district selected a 2026 Blue Bird All American electric bus with a capacity of 78 students. Factors in this decision included larger capacity, earlier delivery date, dual charging capability, and improved battery life and range.
The purchase was partly funded through an EPA Clean School Bus Program grant. The Board of Education approved the acquisition in October 2024. MCPASD is among the first districts in Dane County to implement electric school buses.
“Sustainability is a core value that guides our operations and educational mission as a District,” said Assistant Superintendent of Operations Jerrud Rossing. “Adding an electric bus to our fleet is an example of how MCPASD is leading with purpose by investing in clean energy and implementing sustainable practices to benefit our students, staff, and community.”
In 2021, the Board adopted a resolution targeting 100% renewable energy for all operational needs by 2035. Since then, the district has worked on several initiatives including installing solar panels and upgrading pool systems to improve energy efficiency.
“The Board’s sustainability resolution and actions demonstrate our District commitment to being a responsive leader in this area,” said Board of Education President Bob Hesselbein. “From installing solar panels to pool system upgrades and other District-wide efficiency measures, sustainability is a vital aspect of our long-term strategic vision.”
Rossing also mentioned student involvement: “We have a very active Green Team at the middle school and high school.”
The new bus will operate daily routes for Sunset Ridge Elementary School and Glacier Creek Middle School during both morning and afternoon schedules. It will also be used for athletic events within suitable range.
“The bus will service Sunset Ridge Elementary School and Glacier Creek Middle School on both the morning and afternoon routes,” Hamstra said. “Additionally, we will send it out to athletic events that are within range, when appropriate.”
MCPASD has received recognition at various levels for its environmental efforts. Awards include the U.S. Department of Education’s Green Ribbon District designation as well as local honors such as the Sustainable Middleton Award from the City of Middleton in 2023 and being named Climate Champions by Dane County’s Office of Energy and Climate Change in 2024.
