In recognition of Pride Month, the Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD) has released a curated book list aimed at students from 4K through 12th grade. The initiative, titled “Mad for Reading,” is designed to foster understanding and connection among students, families, and the broader Madison community through literature that promotes empathy and inclusion.

The book collection features narratives that highlight the voices, experiences, and histories of LGBTQ+ individuals. It includes a variety of genres from picture books affirming identity to novels exploring themes of self-discovery and belonging. MMSD emphasizes the importance of these stories in celebrating individuality.

“We invite you to explore these books, read together and talk about the powerful themes they bring to light—not just during Pride Month, but every day—as we continue growing as thoughtful, inclusive readers,” said an MMSD representative.

The selection spans several age groups with elementary picture books such as “Mommy, Mama, and Me” by Leslea Newman and “Pride Colors” by Robin Stevenson. Elementary chapter books include titles like “Melissa” by Alex Gino. Middle school recommendations feature “Zenobia July” by Lisa Bunker and “King and the Dragonflies” by Kacen Callender. High school students can explore works like “Flamer” by Mike Curato and “The Henna Wars” by Adiba Jaigirdar.

This literary effort seeks not only to celebrate Pride Month but also to encourage ongoing conversations around diversity and acceptance throughout the year.
