The City of Madison Engineering Division has announced that the Pleasant View Road Project has been recognized as the 2025 Project of the Year by the American Public Works Association (APWA), Wisconsin Chapter. The project was awarded in the $25-75 million Transportation category.
Pleasant View Road is a crucial north-south commuter route on the west side of Madison and Middleton, serving local and regional traffic. It also acts as an alternate route for USH 12/14 during delays. The project involved reconstructing 1.4 miles of Pleasant View Road between Timber Wolf Trail and USH 14, including turn lane additions and expansions along USH 14 near its intersection with Pleasant View.
Andrew Zwieg, City of Madison Engineering Division Project Manager, stated, “The Pleasant View Road improvements make it easier and safer for all users, whether you’re driving, biking, or walking, while helping traffic move more smoothly between Madison and Middleton.”
The existing corridor had several safety and operational concerns that needed significant improvements to meet current standards. These issues were addressed in collaboration with public and private stakeholders along the corridor.
Strand Associates, Inc. was hired to design the project in collaboration with both cities and key stakeholders to address roadway geometric deficiencies, deteriorating pavement conditions, safety concerns at intersections, gaps in bicycle and pedestrian accommodations, growing transportation needs of communities, and infrastructure resiliency through stormwater improvements.
The reconstruction transformed the corridor into a multi-modal one with numerous safety improvements. The addition of sidewalks and a multi-use path created connections between neighborhoods that previously lacked direct routes. This expanded transportation options within the community while accommodating unique constraints.
