The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources announced on April 22 a Red Flag Warning from 2 to 8 p.m. for Burnett and Washburn counties in northwest Wisconsin, citing dangerous wildland fire conditions. The warning comes as hot temperatures, low humidity, gusty winds, and dry fuels combine to create an increased risk of catastrophic fires.
The warning highlights the seriousness of the current fire threat and urges residents in both affected and surrounding counties—where near-critical fire danger persists—to avoid all burning until conditions improve. The DNR said it will prohibit burning with all DNR-issued burn permits where it has authority in areas with elevated fire danger.
“Campfires, ashes from fireplaces, outdoor grills, smoking, chainsaws, off-road vehicles or other small engines with hot exhaust systems have the potential to throw a spark, ignite a fire and spread quickly. Please use extreme caution until the fire weather and the fuel conditions improve,” according to the department’s statement.
The DNR responded to nearly 70 wildfires in the past week throughout northwest Wisconsin—the same area under the Red Flag Warning. The agency is at full staffing across the state as severe conditions continue and elevated fire risk is expected through tomorrow until rain arrives.
According to the official website, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources manages state parks, trails, forests, wildlife areas; enforces environmental laws; offers hunting and fishing licenses; provides environmental permits; supports public input through advisory councils; focuses on conserving resources for present and future generations; and extends its management efforts statewide.
Residents are encouraged to check current wildfire reports and burning restrictions on the DNR website as authorities remain vigilant during this period of heightened risk.
