Representative Bob Donovan of Greenfield issued a statement following the shooting of two Milwaukee police officers. The officers were ambushed while responding to a shots fired call and were critically injured. One officer now has non-life-threatening injuries, while the other remains in critical condition. This incident marks the third time this year that a Milwaukee police officer has been shot.
Donovan urged Wisconsin residents to keep the officers and their families in their thoughts and prayers. He stated, “First, I am asking all the residents of the State of Wisconsin to join Kathy and me in keeping these officers and their families in your thoughts and your prayers.”
He also addressed the issue of blame, stating it should be placed on the individual who chose to use a gun against the officers: “Second, if we are going to place blame, then let us place it squarely, where it belongs, with the scumbag who freely chose to pick up a gun, who chose to point that gun at these two officers, and who decided to pull the trigger.”
Donovan criticized Mayor Johnson’s stance on gun control: “Apparently Mayor Johnson doesn’t see it that way—he blames the guns. Well, let’s explore that for a moment. I would venture to say the overwhelming majority of people living in northern Wisconsin have guns yet they are not regularly shooting at cops and terrorizing their communities.”
He further emphasized his point by comparing Milwaukee with Waukesha County: “A little closer to home, I would guess a large number of Waukesha County residents own guns, yet the same holds true for them.”
In conclusion, Donovan called for action from city leaders: “Mayor Johnson, I expect better of you and so do many people. The bottom line is that Milwaukee doesn’t have a gun problem; it has a criminal problem. The sooner the mayor and city leaders admit this fact and take steps to address it, the better off we all will be.”
