The Dane Dances are back in Madison this August after missing 2020 because of COVID-19.
They will be held each Friday night during the month on the Monona Terrace rooftop,1 John Nolen Dr. Admission is free and tickets aren’t required.
“The much-anticipated summer music series is a great way to get down and dance with your friends, coworkers or family,” the organizers said on their website. “The rooftop gets shaking as the sun sets against the iconic Wisconsin State Capitol with the breeze of the Lake Monona at your back while you dance. Feel free to bring a blanket, chair and picnic basket. Seating on the rooftop is limited.”
The event “promotes inclusivity with a fun night of music and dancing to DJs and bands for all ages,” the website says.
“We reach out to the whole community to make sure that everyone who attends Dane Dances feels welcome and a part of this great community that we have,” said Al Cooper, Dane Dances board president said in a July 29 press briefing.
The series, funded by donations, has become one of Madison's premier events, Cooper said.
"People from around the state attend our event and find what we call the magic of Dane Dance," he said. "People are able to talk together in a social event and enjoy music, food and each other to show that if we can dance and party together we should be able to live together for the rest of our lives together in harmony."
No carry-in alcohol is allowed although cocktails may be purchased at the event.
Food by Kipps Kitchen, Lake Vista Cafe, La Taguara and Lemongrass is also sold at the events.
“Dane Dances will follow the Dane County City of Madison Health Department and CDC Guidelines,” the website said. “For outdoor events at this point masks are not required outside, those that are not vaccinated should wear them. Inside city and county buildings masks are recommended.”
The Aug. 13 event will feature the Eddie Butts Band at 6 p.m. and Orquesta Sal Soul at 8 p.m.
The last event in the series is on Aug. 27 starting at 5:30 p.m.
The series, founded in 1999, was cancelled last year because of COVID-19, the website said.
