Freakfest is the historically famous Halloween celebration for the City of Madison, and it is celebrated on the Saturday closest to Halloween. But the event has been canceled this year, too, just like the last time owing to the current public health scenario.
"Cases of the delta variant are still on the rise in our state and our county. As we work to keep residents in our community safe and healthy, it is common sense that there will be no city-sponsored Freakfest this year. As I've said before, alcohol and COVID don't mix well. I'm asking everyone to be responsible and safe if they celebrate Halloween or homecoming that weekend," Mayor Rhodes-Conway said.
The seven-day case average in Dane County increased from 14 two months ago to 106 in mid-September. Even the seven-day hospitalization rate has increased from 24 to 90 in just two months.
Apart from the emergency face-covering order, no other mandates are in effect in the region. Contrary to last year's Halloween, nothing has been said about limiting or banning gatherings.
Madison has also canceled the trick-or-treat portion of Downtown Madison Family Halloween but said they will still be holding "mini-events and activities" during the last week of October.
