The Big Ten Conference awarded Pat Richter its Ford-Kinnick Leadership Award, highlighting his success in leadership after his playing career.
While in Wisconsin, he was drafted first-round draft pick of the Washington Redskins, Big 10 reported.
“There has always been a Clint Eastwood-like stature and demeanor to Pat Richter whose achievements as a multi-talented athlete and multi-dimensional administrator have set him apart,” Mike Lucas, a writer for the University of Wisconsin, wrote on Twitter. “He helped put the ‘W’ back in UW athletics. Winning. Making our day (many days and decades over).”

Richter served as the university’s athletic director in 1989.
Richter, of Wisconsin, is this year’s recipient of the Big Ten’s Ford-Kinnick Leadership Award, recognizing his achievements in leadership after his student-athlete career in the Big Ten.
While a student at UW, Richter received the All-America (1961-62) and academic All-America (1962), as well as led the Big Ten in receiving and yardage at various points throughout his time as a tight end.
Richter played in the NFL before retiring and receiving a law degree from UW. He then worked for Oscar Meyer Corporation before returning to UW as the athletic director for 15 years and transforming the athletic program.
