The University of Wisconsin women's ice hockey team swept the Bemidji State Beavers last weekend, earning a spot in the team’s 12th straight WCHA Final Faceoff.
The Badgers, ranked fourth with a 25-6-4 record, will take on Ohio State in the faceoff, which will be played Saturday, March 5 in Minneapolis. The winner will play in Sunday’s (March 6) championship.
“They've been playing well,” head coach Mark Johnson said, as reported on uwbadgers.com. “Even last night's game, I thought they had some quality opportunities and we didn't capitalize on some of them, but today, if you get enough of them they eventually go in so it was nice to see them create some space and get some goals.”
Johnson’s comment about “last night’s game” referred to the Badgers’ Friday, Feb. 25 game where they had to struggle to edge the Beavers 2-1.
The offense was hitting on all cylinders Saturday, Feb. 26 with Casey O’Brien as a big offensive contributor in the 5-0 win. O’Brien scored twice — including one goal just about a minute into the game — and added an assist for 5 points, uwbadgers.com reported. Nicole LaMantia, Daryl Watts and Makenna Webster rounded out the scoring.
Senior Sophie Shirley, with a second-period assist, became the 13th Badger in history to score a career total of 150 points or more, a buckys5thquarter.com report stated.
