This week, the Assembly passed a historic workforce package in a special session, providing much-needed relief for the middle class and addressing important issues such as childcare affordability and workforce development.

One of the key components of the package is a $2 billion middle-class tax cut. The bill aims to reduce the tax burden on single filers making $27,630 or more, or $36,840 for married couples, by lowering the state's third income tax bracket rate from 5.3% to 4.4%. This change would result in an average savings of $600 annually for Wisconsin families.

In addition to tax relief, the legislation also focuses on increasing childcare affordability and availability. The bill expands the childcare and dependent tax credit, allowing families with two children in childcare to receive a credit of over $5,000. To further enhance availability, the Assembly voted to expand the Provider Assistance for Licensing program (PAL), which provides one-time assistance to unlicensed childcare providers to help them become licensed. This program has proven to be effective in creating new childcare slots across the state.

The workforce development aspect of the package aims to address Wisconsin's ongoing workforce shortage. The bill includes provisions to streamline occupational licensing hurdles for workers and provides grants to targeted sectors in need. Additionally, measures have been passed to reform welfare programs by requiring work searches for those on unemployment, strengthening drug testing requirements, and implementing procedures to identify fraud.

Representative Tyler August, who played a key role in the passage of the historic workforce package, expressed his satisfaction with the legislation, stating, "This package is a significant step towards providing much-needed relief to the middle class and addressing crucial issues such as childcare affordability and workforce development."

The passage of this legislation marks an important milestone in Wisconsin's efforts to support its residents and strengthen its workforce. With the tax relief measures, expanded childcare tax credits, and workforce development reforms, the state is taking proactive steps to ensure the well-being of its citizens and foster economic growth.

Overall, the historic workforce package passed by the Assembly demonstrates a commitment to addressing the needs of the middle class and investing in the future of Wisconsin. As the state continues to face workforce challenges, these measures will play a vital role in building a strong and resilient economy.
