Gracie Nelson, the student speaker for the 2024 spring commencement at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, has shared her journey and aspirations leading up to the significant event. Reflecting on her time at the university, Nelson recounted her initial challenges as a freshman during the pandemic and the meaningful connections that helped her navigate through uncertain times.
Nelson expressed gratitude for her roommate, Sydney Pham, stating, “I got so lucky... We became best friends. I don’t think I would have survived freshman year without her because I felt very isolated at times.” Despite the limitations posed by COVID-19, Nelson actively engaged in campus activities and took on leadership roles, including serving as the senior class president.
In her upcoming commencement speech, Nelson aims to highlight the transformative power of authentic self-expression and the importance of fostering positive change within the campus community. She emphasized, “every person sitting there is remarkable and worth celebrating, whether your strength was winning a million awards or being someone’s best friend. It all has value.”
Nelson’s dedication to inclusivity and advocacy was evident in her efforts within the Greek life community, where she worked towards creating a more welcoming environment for all individuals. Reflecting on her experiences, Nelson shared, “I really dedicated myself to being my full authentic self in every space I entered and because I truly believe in the power of each person to make a difference.”
As she prepares to graduate with a double major in political science and gender and women’s studies, with honors through the College of Letters & Science, Nelson plans to attend law school post-graduation. Her commitment to celebrating her fellow classmates and promoting positive change on campus serves as a testament to her leadership and advocacy.
On May 11, Gracie Nelson and Sydney Pham, who have remained close friends since their first day at UW–Madison, will walk together as they graduate. The story of their enduring friendship is a fitting symbol of the connections and experiences that have shaped Nelson’s journey leading up to her role as the student speaker for the spring commencement.
