The annual August Moving Days for downtown Madison will soon commence. Thousands of residents will be relocating within the downtown area, prompting decisions on what to do with their belongings.
The Streets Division will provide more information about move-out operations in the coming days to inform residents about available services.
Residents preparing to move have several tasks ahead. The time to start is now.
"Make a Plan & Start Today"
Packing should not be left until the last minute, as lease endings are predictable. Identify items needed for your new place and those no longer required.
"Donate Usable Items"
For items no longer needed, consider donating them to one of many Madison-area thrift stores. Some stores offer home collection services at no cost; contact them to arrange this.
The Streets Division Reuse website lists local donation or resale opportunities at www.cityofmadison.com/ReUse. Donating or reselling usable items ensures they are reused by others and reduces landfill waste.
"Items That Cannot Be Donated"
Use scheduled collections and drop-off sites for disposing of non-reusable items. Follow rules regarding large item collection and the work order system.
Why does August Moving Days matter?
Around August 15 each year, most leases in the student moving area of downtown Madison expire. Approximately 30,000 student-residents living near the University of Wisconsin campus move out simultaneously, generating significant garbage that Streets Division crews collect, much by hand. It is a large operation but can be efficient and safe when collection rules are followed.
