Starting the week of August 4, 2024, and ending on Friday, August 23, 2024, the large item work order rules will differ for residents in the student move-out area.

Residents in this area will not need to complete a work order before setting out large items destined for the landfill between these dates. Items such as couches, chairs, desks, mattresses, tables, area rugs, wood bookshelves, and plastic shelving units can be placed curbside without prior notice. Crews will be regularly patrolling the student move-out area to collect these items.

However, large item work orders are still required during this period for certain special items like microwaves, air conditioners, tires, dehumidifiers, and other items that either carry a fee or require special handling. Work orders ensure that the correct truck is routed to collect these items.

After 6:30 am on Friday, August 23, all residents must complete a work order to get their home on the pickup schedule for large item collection. Normal operations will resume after this time. Residents are reminded to submit their work orders and set out items only on the specified date to avoid neighborhood clutter and potential fines from Building Inspection.

For those bringing items to a drop-off site during this period, most items are accepted free of charge without requiring a work order. This remains consistent with normal procedures throughout the year. However, appliances and special items brought to drop-off sites may incur fees depending on whether residents receive recycling collection from the Streets Division.

Homes receiving recycling collection from the Streets Division do not need to pay fees for dropping off special items and appliances due to coverage by the Resource Recovery Special Charge. Conversely, homes with recycling collected by private companies must pay fees for these special items. These fees can be paid via fee stickers purchased through the work order system or directly at Streets East or Streets West offices.

Residents outside of the student move-out area will see no changes; they must continue completing work orders before placing large items out for collection.

For additional information or questions:

- Residents east of S. Park Street (including the isthmus) should call 608-246-4532.

- Residents west of S. Park Street (including neighborhoods around Camp Randall) should call 608-266-4681.

More details can also be found on the Streets Division’s Moving Days website and Recyclopedia.
