Milwaukee chef Dan Jacobs, known for his participation in Bravo's "Top Chef," will deliver the keynote address at the University of Wisconsin–Madison's winter commencement on December 15. Jacobs gained recognition as a finalist in the 21st season of the cooking competition, finishing as a runner-up.
Jacobs is the head chef and co-owner of Milwaukee restaurants EsterEv and Dandan. Alongside his business partner, Dan Van Rite, he has been a five-time James Beard Best Chef Midwest semi-finalist and is nominated for the 2024 award.
During his time on "Top Chef," Jacobs discussed his experiences with Kennedy’s Disease, a genetic neuromuscular disorder diagnosed in him in 2016. He participated in the show to inspire others with disabilities to follow their dreams.
Chancellor Jennifer L. Mnookin praised Jacobs: “During his time on ‘Top Chef,’ Dan Jacobs impressed us with his culinary skills and inspired us with his humanity.” She highlighted his achievements as an entrepreneur in a challenging industry.
Beyond cooking, Jacobs has raised over $90,000 for Kennedy’s Disease awareness and actively participates in various charitable organizations such as the Independent Restaurant Coalition and World Central Kitchen. He also spoke to President-elect Joe Biden representing independent restaurateurs.
Sam Mahlum, senior class president at UW–Madison, remarked: “Chef Dan is a role model for so many of us.”
Originally from Chicago, Jacobs developed ties to Wisconsin early in his career through positions at local restaurants. His journey led him to Milwaukee in 2011 after working at top-tier Chicago establishments.
Reflecting on "Top Chef," Jacobs stated: “It was a crash course in tenacity, grit, and perseverance — all skills that are essential in life.” He aims to inspire graduates by sharing personal challenges and celebrating success through resilience.
