At Sun Prairie, the focus remains on preparing students for success beyond graduation. The AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) program is a key part of this mission, helping students from grades 7-12 develop skills and confidence for college or career readiness. A notable aspect of the program is the return of alumni as coaches, including Damanique Freeman ('19), Adrian Jones ('21), and Linda Thao ('24). These former students are now mentors, contributing to a supportive community.
Damanique Freeman graduated in 2019 and currently attends Capella University while teaching at Foss Swim School. She emphasizes the importance of connections made through AVID, saying that they made her feel "safe and valued" and helped her realize her potential. Freeman hopes to inspire current students by sharing how AVID has impacted her life.
Adrian Jones, a 2021 graduate working at FedEx and as an Early Childhood Educator assistant teacher, was encouraged by Mrs. Griffin to become an AVID coach. Having faced academic challenges herself, she aims to help others overcome similar obstacles. Jones believes that having a caring coach who understands their struggles can provide valuable support for students.
Linda Thao graduated in 2024 and is attending Madison Area Technical College while working part-time as an AVID Coach. She wants to give back to the program that supported her by being someone whom students can look back on positively. As an alumna, she relates closely with current students' experiences.
AVID fosters a tight-knit community where students grow together through both triumphs and challenges. Alumni often maintain connections with each other, creating lasting networks of support beyond academics. The program builds confidence in navigating college applications, scholarships, and careers. Middle schoolers begin envisioning their futures while high schoolers take actionable steps toward their goals.
The unique element of AVID lies in its alumni returning to mentor new generations, passing down experiences that empower future success.
