Progress is being made on the Madison Metropolitan School District's (MMSD) 2024 facilities referendum projects. Initial concepts have been created to guide discussions on the design process, focusing on optimal placement of buildings within available spaces. MMSD plans to collaborate with internal teams, students, surrounding neighborhoods, and the broader community to gather insights that will aid in finalizing designs.
"We are just at the beginning stages of envisioning what these buildings could potentially be," stated Scott Chehak, Senior Executive Director of Building Services. "Our main goal right now is to focus on Sherman and Black Hawk middle schools, Gompers Elementary School and Shabazz High School."
These schools were prioritized based on geographic location and findings from the Facilities Condition Assessment, which highlighted critical HVAC and plumbing needs along with mechanical systems nearing their life expectancy. Construction is expected to commence in February 2026.
Alongside the referendum projects, staff are developing an enterprise asset management system aimed at proactive maintenance across all district facilities. This system will document detailed information about assets such as plumbing, electrical systems, and roofs. The electronic tracking of each asset's condition and lifespan will facilitate more targeted budgeting and planning. A portion of funds will be reserved for unforeseen issues.
"MMSD recently passed a historic referendum, and we are excited this work is moving forward," said Superintendent Dr. Joe Gothard. "However, we also have 65 facilities throughout the district that need regular upkeep and maintenance. We need to maintain what we currently have to help ensure they last as long as reasonably possible."
