Madison Public Library, in collaboration with Madison Parks, is seeking a local naturalist to serve as the Naturalist-in-Residence for the summer of 2025. The residency will involve leading workshops, guided walks, and programs across libraries and city green spaces from June 15 to July 26.
The program invites applications from educators, gardeners, scientists, writers, biologists, and others interested in highlighting Madison's diverse natural areas. The selected individual will work with library staff to develop eight to ten programs aimed at encouraging patrons to engage with nature.
Michelle Herbrand, Community Engagement Librarian at Central Library, stated: “Naturalist programs are an opportunity for participants to explore, learn, and reflect upon the natural world in new ways, and learn to incorporate nature into their daily lives.”
Potential topics for these programs include gardening, nature education, food independence, environmental justice, cultural practices, urban naturalism among others. Additionally, the Naturalist-in-Residence will collaborate with library staff to create book lists that highlight relevant materials from the library’s collection.
The residency offers a stipend ranging from $1,940 to $2,300 plus additional compensation for media interviews. Applicants must be available for project planning starting in May. Submissions will be accepted online from March 1 through March 31 at madpl.org/naturalist.
This initiative is supported by Nancy Leff and Kenneth Lerner. Madison Public Library has been promoting education and community involvement in Madison for 150 years. More information can be found on their website or social media platforms.
