Naomi Saba Lewis, a senior at Shabazz High School, is recognized for her dedication to community involvement and personal growth. She values being part of a school environment where open dialogue is encouraged, even when disagreements arise. "We need to be able to share with others while realizing we are not always going to agree and that’s okay," Saba Lewis expressed. "And at Shabazz, we can do that."
Saba Lewis actively participates in community service projects inspired by her mother's example of compassion. Recently, she volunteered at a food pantry assisting with the distribution of groceries. "It made me feel good knowing that people wouldn’t go to bed hungry," she shared.
In addition to her community work, Saba Lewis often offers guidance to peers navigating their own identity challenges. As someone from a biracial background, she understands the complexities of acceptance and fitting in. Her mother has been instrumental in helping her find inner strength.
Principal Nathan O’Shaughnessy praised Naomi's reflective nature: "Naomi is introspective and reflective. She takes time to assess and learn, and when she shares it’s powerful." He also noted his appreciation for her humor and honesty.
Saba Lewis advises others on the importance of self-identity over external opinions: "When you start taking people’s opinions to heart, they can really take over your thoughts," she said. "It’s important to let go of those opinions."
As she looks ahead, Saba Lewis considers pursuing cosmetology but remains interested in nature-related activities as well. Shabazz High School provides opportunities for experiential learning through field trips exploring local farms and natural sites. Reflecting on these experiences, she remarked on their value: "That’s why I like this school…all the hands-on learning and the community here."
