The City of Madison is once again collaborating with Sustain Dane to present online Recycle Better classes. The initial class will commence on April 17, 2025, offering residents an opportunity to improve their recycling habits.
The Recycle Better course aims to teach participants the importance and methods of proper recycling, equipping them with the skills to advocate within their communities. Attendees can become Certified Recycling Stewards, empowering them to educate their social circles. Since 2021, the course has educated over 1,300 individuals, whose outreach projects have impacted more than 100,000 people.
The course comprises two 90-minute online sessions. The first session is scheduled for April 17, and the second for April 24, both taking place from 12 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. Further information and registration are available on the Sustain Dane website and the Streets Division’s online platform.
Sustain Dane charges a nominal fee of $15 for course registration. Anyone for whom the cost poses a barrier is encouraged to reach out to Lorenza Zebell at Sustain Dane for a possible fee waiver.
For those unable to attend the initial time slots, an evening class will be held in July. Additionally, a Spanish version of the course, in collaboration with the Latino Academy of Workforce Development, is scheduled for May 24 and May 31. Interested participants can register via the provided link.
Improper recycling practices present costs and risks. A survey by the Streets Division found that 18.7% of materials placed in recycling carts were inappropriate. Incorrect items complicate sorting processes, endanger facility workers, and increase waste management expenses.
Recycling rules vary across regions, adding to the confusion. Wisconsin has precise recycling mandates, and Madison offers numerous recycling opportunities, provided residents adhere to local guidelines.
Madison residents are encouraged to take the Recycle Better course to disseminate vital local recycling information. There are also free resources available, including decals on recycling cart lids that offer guidance.
More information on Madison’s recycling program is available at the City of Madison’s official website, and further details on Sustain Dane’s offerings can be found on their website.
