The University of Wisconsin–Madison has selected columnist and humorist Jason Gay as the keynote speaker for its Spring 2025 Commencement. Gay, a noted sports and culture columnist for the Wall Street Journal, is a proud alumnus of UW–Madison. The commencement, scheduled for May 10 at Camp Randall Stadium, will honor all bachelor's, law, and master's degree candidates.
Chancellor Jennifer L. Mnookin expressed pride in having Gay as the speaker, stating, "Badgers don’t come more passionate than Jason Gay, and we’re equally proud of him.” Mnookin highlighted his achievements as a renowned columnist and writer.
Gay, who has a bachelor's degree in political science from UW–Madison, described his return to the campus as an honor. "This is a day to celebrate UW–Madison students and their families, and I can’t wait to be there," he said.
Born in Boston and raised in Belmont, Massachusetts, Gay's early career included stints at several esteemed publications. He has worked with GQ, Rolling Stone, the New York Observer, and the Boston Phoenix. Gay is also a published author, with the book “Little Victories,” and most recently, “I Wouldn’t Do That If I Were Me.”
Sam Mahlum, the senior class president, commented on Gay’s contribution to the event, noting, "Inviting a speaker like alumnus Jason Gay to spring commencement is befitting for the class of 2025," emphasizing Gay's loyalty to the university and the encouragement his speech will provide to the graduates.
