MSCR is commemorating Afterschool Professionals Week from April 21-25. The celebration highlights the dedication of professionals who are vital to the afterschool programs of the Madison School & Community Recreation (MSCR).

Officials emphasized that MSCR professionals "create safe spaces, ignite a passion for learning and are a lifeline for MMSD families." The programs are reported to engage 585 students in afterschool activities and 374 in enrichment at 15 elementary schools. They also inspire over 5,000 middle schoolers and 1,700 high schoolers after school. Additionally, 80 youth in grades 1-10 are supported at the Allied Learning Center and Meadowood Neighborhood Center.

The organization underlines its commitment to nurturing well-rounded students and equipping them for success. The afterschool programs include a wide range of activities beyond traditional offerings.

Some initiatives include the "Healthy Smiles at Allied Learning Center," where UW Madison students and the Madison Smile Initiative taught oral health skills. The program provided essential dental tools and knowledge to participants.

In partnership with MSCR Aquatics and local high school swim teams, free swimming lessons are offered at Orchard Ridge and Henderson. Support from entities like the Friends of MSCR has been crucial for these lessons.

The programs also encourage budding scientists through collaborations with UW Science Clubs, featuring the Adult Role Models in Science (ARMS) program, involving UW-Madison science majors.

An annual spring break trip to historic sites for Cherokee Heights Scholars of Excellence students included visits to Memphis and Nashville, enhancing their exposure to history and heritage.

MSCR's sports initiatives provide organized year-round sports opportunities for youth through collaborations with MSCR Sports. Spring leagues for middle school students involve flag football and kickball teams. Contacts and further information can be found through MSCR Site Directors or the MSCR website.

Elementary soccer programs are also scheduled, offering young athletes traveling and competitive opportunities against other MSCR afterschool sites.

MSCR expresses pride in offering these enriching experiences for Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD) students and invites anyone interested to learn more about their afterschool programs.
