The Madison Police Department has introduced its 71st academy class, consisting of 35 recruits, including three accelerated academy officers. The new recruits took an oath to serve the city on Tuesday.
Captain Stephanie Drescher, who leads the academy and training department, commented on the diverse backgrounds of the recruits: “These officers come from a variety of backgrounds with a plethora of different life experiences and paths. They come together today, with a drive to forge change and to be a part of something bigger than themselves – a desire to be humble, selfless public servants.”
The group includes individuals from various professions such as law enforcement, military service, teaching, and orthodontic technology. Despite their varied pasts, all share an eagerness to learn and serve Madison.
New recruit Zoe Tabor expressed her enthusiasm: “It's a childhood dream come true. I am beyond excited to step into a role of service and work within my community at MPD.”
Over the next six months, these recruits will undergo extensive training in criminal law, patrol operations, crisis intervention, and use of community resources. The Madison Police Department's training is noted for being among the most comprehensive in the nation.
Acting Chief John Patterson addressed the recruits during Tuesday's ceremony: “These new officers are joining more than just a law enforcement agency. They are becoming caretakers of our community. They are committed to earning the trust of the people they serve and fostering meaningful relationships and partnerships with everyone in our community."
To engage with the public throughout this process, MPD plans to share special social media videos documenting this year's academy each Monday.
