Temperatures in Dane County are expected to rise significantly, with heat indices reaching up to 103°F. In response, the National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory starting from noon on Saturday, June 21, and continuing until 7:00 p.m. on Monday, June 23.

The combination of high temperatures and humidity can lead to health issues such as heat exhaustion or heat stroke. Statistics show that extreme heat events cause over 1,000 deaths annually in the United States. Vulnerable groups include older adults, outdoor workers or exercisers, infants and children, people without housing, and those with chronic medical conditions.

To mitigate risks during this period of extreme heat, several safety measures are recommended:

- **Stay cool**: Remain in air-conditioned environments. Public facilities like senior centers, libraries, and malls can serve as cooling stations; it's advisable to check their operating hours beforehand. Outdoor activities should be limited during midday when temperatures peak. Loose-fitting clothing is recommended for comfort.

- **Stay hydrated**: Increased water intake is crucial; do not wait until you feel thirsty to drink water. It's suggested to consume two to four cups of water every hour if engaged in outdoor activities. Alcohol and sugary drinks should be avoided due to their dehydrating effects.

- **Stay connected**: Keep informed through local news about heat warnings and safety advice. Regularly check on friends and family members through calls or visits.

Individuals experiencing symptoms like overheating, weakness, dizziness, nausea, or muscle cramps should seek cooler environments immediately and hydrate adequately. If symptoms persist or worsen, medical attention is necessary.

In cases where a child or pet is left unattended in a parked car during these conditions, authorities urge calling 9-1-1 immediately while remaining at the scene until help arrives.
