The City of Madison is anticipating multiple brief but intense storm events over the next few days, which could lead to urban flash flooding on roadways. Residents are advised not to drive through flooded areas, as such conditions can be hazardous.

According to city officials, "Intense rains of this type can overwhelm the stormwater drainage system resulting in brief (normally < 20 min) flooding of intersections." The potential for flash flooding arises when the stormwater infrastructure cannot handle the volume of water from heavy rainfall.

Residents are cautioned against driving through floodwaters, even with larger vehicles like SUVs or pickups, due to risks such as displaced sewer access covers. Flash floods may occur throughout the city, and certain intersections have been identified as particularly vulnerable:

- East Washington Avenue at Livingston Street

- East Washington Avenue at Mifflin Street

- Third Street at Johnson Street

- Park Street at Pick N Save

- Trailsway at Sherman Avenue

- High Point Road at Tramore Trail

The city advises checking routes and consulting the City Historical Street Flooding Map before commuting or parking overnight to avoid known flood-prone areas during these events.

City crews are actively working to clean major storm sewer grates in priority locations and will continue these efforts as weather permits. They are also clearing downed trees and limbs from bike paths.
