Representative Bob Donovan has called for prompt action from the State Senate on a public safety bill aimed at addressing "street takeovers" in Milwaukee. According to the Milwaukee Police Department, there have been 52 such incidents since May. These events disrupt daily life and pose risks to public safety.

Donovan authored Assembly Bill 78, which would allow municipalities to pass ordinances enabling the towing of vehicles involved in reckless driving, even if the driver is not the vehicle's owner or it is their first offense. The bill aims to provide law enforcement with tools to curb these dangerous activities.

"Time is of the essence," said Rep. Donovan. "Summer is on our doorstep and these street takeovers will only continue to increase in number throughout the summer. MPD needs this legislation to immediately take action against these reckless drivers."

The Assembly passed the bill on March 13, 2025, but it has been pending a vote in the State Senate since April 15, 2025.

"I am personally urging the State Senate to no longer delay. With each day that passes, we are losing the opportunity to give Milwaukee enhanced options to tackle reckless driving and the chaos that continues to plague the city," Rep. Donovan concluded.
