The City of Madison Streets and Urban Forestry Division is relocating the site where residents can collect free mulch. The current location at 121 E. Olin Avenue will cease to offer free mulch on July 11, 2025, as announced by city officials.
Beginning July 14, 2025, residents can obtain free mulch from the Sycamore and South Point drop-off sites during regular hours. Residents are allowed up to 30 gallons per visit, equivalent to six 5-gallon buckets. Supplies are limited and restocking will occur based on staff availability and supply levels.
The move is necessitated by a construction project at the Olin Avenue site aimed at improving the central drop-off area, which is expected to continue until December 2025. To maintain safety during construction, daytime traffic must be minimized, prompting the relocation of the mulch supply.
Despite these changes, larger volumes of wood mulch for purchase will still be available at Olin Avenue. Decisions regarding future access to small quantities of free mulch post-construction have yet to be made.
Further information about the construction project can be accessed through the Engineering Division’s project page. Details on Streets Division services, including wood mulch availability, are provided on their website.
