Madison, WI — State lawmakers Senator Julian Bradley and Representative Chuck Wichgers have criticized Governor Tony Evers for vetoing funding aimed at flood mitigation in the Town of Norway, Racine County. The project was intended to safeguard homes, farmland, and infrastructure near State Highway 36 from flooding and had bipartisan support before being removed from the state budget by the Governor.
The legislators accused Governor Evers of politicizing the issue and retaliating against the Legislature's decision not to renew an unrelated Natural Resources program. "This isn’t a policy disagreement, it’s a hostage situation," said Senator Bradley. He further commented on the veto as a punishment to innocent families in Racine County.
Bradley and Wichgers highlighted that another flood prevention project in Northeastern Wisconsin initially faced a similar veto but has since received state assistance. They are urging that similar measures be taken for the Town of Norway.
“Our constituents aren’t pawns or bargaining chips,” stated Rep. Wichgers. He urged Governor Evers to address this issue consistently across different regions of the state without political bias.
The lawmakers are calling for immediate restoration of funding to ensure community safety is not compromised.
