The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources has issued a reminder for sturgeon spearers that the deadline to apply for an Upriver Lakes spearing tag for the 2026 season is August 1, 2025. The Upriver Lakes, which include lakes Poygan, Winneconne, and Butte des Morts, have a higher harvest rate. As such, those wishing to spear in these lakes must apply for a tag.

A total of 500 applicants will receive tags through a drawing process where priority is given based on preference points. Groups applying together will have their point value determined by the member with the lowest points. Alternatively, spearers can purchase a preference point instead of applying for a tag.

Applications or preference points can be submitted online via the Go Wild system or at any license sales location. Successful applicants will be notified by October 1, 2025, and may then purchase their spearing license. Those not selected will receive a preference point for future drawings and can buy a Lake Winnebago spearing license.

The sturgeon spearing season on the Winnebago System begins February 14, 2026. It lasts up to 16 days or until harvest caps are reached. Separate caps are set for Lake Winnebago and the Upriver Lakes.
