The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is set to host its annual Family Fun Day at the Brule State Fish Hatchery in Brule on Saturday, August 16. The event will begin at 10 a.m. and is organized in partnership with the Douglas County Fish and Game League, Brule River Sportsmen’s Club, the Wild Rivers Chapter of Trout Unlimited, and the Western Lake Superior Trollers Association.
This free event is designed for families and offers a range of activities suitable for all ages. Visitors will have opportunities to watch stream shocking and fish filleting demonstrations, take guided tours of the hatchery, try fly tying and youth archery lessons, participate in t-shirt painting, and enjoy catch-and-release fishing.
The Brule Fish Hatchery plays an important role in raising Seeforellen brown trout for stocking efforts in both Lake Michigan and Lake Superior. This work supports local fisheries by helping maintain healthy fish populations.
Although the hatchery is located within the Brule River State Forest, attendees will not need vehicle admission stickers on the day of the event. However, anyone age 16 or older who wishes to participate in fishing activities must have a valid Wisconsin fishing license.
Additional details about Family Fun Day can be found on the DNR Events Calendar at https://dnr.wisconsin.gov/events.
“Family Fun Day at Brule State Fish Hatchery gives people a chance to see firsthand how we raise trout for Wisconsin’s lakes,” said an organizer from the DNR. “It’s also a great way for families to learn about conservation while enjoying outdoor activities together.”
The event aims to educate visitors about fisheries management practices while encouraging interest in outdoor recreation. Activities such as stream shocking demonstrations allow participants to observe how biologists monitor fish populations in local streams. Guided tours provide insight into hatchery operations and highlight their contribution to regional fish stocking programs.
Hands-on experiences like fly tying workshops and youth archery lessons are included to introduce young attendees to new skills related to fishing and wildlife appreciation. The catch-and-release fishing activity offers children a practical introduction to angling under supervision.
In addition to learning opportunities, creative outlets such as t-shirt painting are available for younger guests. The collaborative effort between multiple organizations reflects ongoing community support for natural resource education and stewardship initiatives across northern Wisconsin.
The event runs from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m., giving families ample time to explore all scheduled activities throughout the day at 13847 Hatchery Road, Brule, WI 54820.
