The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has announced its intention to authorize the incidental taking of a rare lizard species as part of the ATC Northern Adams County Network Improvement project. The project, located in Adams County, involves both upgrades and new construction of transmission lines.

Incidental take is defined by the DNR as the unintentional loss of individual animals or plants that are endangered or threatened, provided that such loss does not threaten the overall population of the species. In this case, the slender glass lizard, which is listed as endangered in Wisconsin, has been confirmed near the proposed project site.

According to DNR staff assessments, there is potential for some slender glass lizards to be affected during the course of construction and upgrades. However, officials have determined that steps will be taken to reduce these impacts.

"The DNR concludes that the proposed project will minimize the impacts to the species by adhering to conservation measures; is not likely to jeopardize the continued existence and recovery of the state population of the species or the whole plant-animal community of which it is a part; and has benefit to the public health, safety or welfare that justifies the action," according to a statement from DNR.

To address concerns about potential harm to this endangered reptile, conservation measures will be included in any authorization granted for incidental take. These measures are designed specifically to limit negative effects on local populations of slender glass lizard while allowing necessary infrastructure improvements to proceed.

The DNR also noted that detailed information about their assessment process and background on this rare lizard can be accessed through their Incidental Take Public Notices webpage or by contacting Conservation Biologist Rori Paloski directly at Rori.Paloski@wisconsin.gov or 608-516-3742.

As part of its standard procedure when considering authorizations related to endangered species, DNR is seeking input from members of the public. Written comments regarding how this project might impact slender glass lizards can be submitted until August 13, 2025. Comments should be directed either by mail or email to:
