For the 14th year in a row, University of Wisconsin Hospitals has been named the top hospital in Wisconsin by U.S. News & World Report’s Best Hospitals list.
Dr. Peter Newcomer, chief operating officer at UW Health, credited the recognition to the daily efforts of staff and ongoing research efforts. “It’s exciting,” he said. “From advanced clinical care to cutting-edge research, UW Health continues to lead the way.”
U.S. News & World Report evaluated over 4,000 hospitals for its annual rankings. University of Wisconsin Hospitals earned national rankings in eight specialties: diabetes and endocrinology, ear, nose and throat, gastroenterology and gastrointestinal surgery, geriatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, orthopedics, pulmonology and lung surgery, rehabilitation and urology. Diabetes and endocrinology as well as rehabilitation were newly ranked specialties for UW Health this year.
Additionally, four other specialties—cancer; cardiology, heart and vascular surgery; neurology and neurosurgery; and urology—were rated as high performing.
University of Wisconsin Hospitals includes both University Hospital on the University of Wisconsin–Madison campus with 505 beds and East Madison Hospital with 83 beds on Madison’s east side. The system also comprises American Family Children’s Hospital, UW Health SwedishAmerican Hospital, UW Health | Carbone Cancer Center, the UW Health Rehabilitation Hospital, along with an affiliation with UnityPoint Health – Meriter.
The hospital received the highest rating for 18 procedures and conditions affecting people aged 65 years or older. These include abdominal aortic aneurysm repair; aortic valve surgery; back surgery; chronic obstructive pulmonary disease; colon cancer surgery; gynecological cancer surgery; heart attack; heart failure; hip fracture; hip replacement; kidney failure; knee replacement; leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma; lung cancer surgery; pneumonia; prostate cancer surgery; stroke; and transcatheter aortic valve replacement.
