Madison College student Sergio Perez contributed his skills to the City of Madison’s Triangle Redevelopment Project this summer. The civil engineering student developed a 3D model display for the $300 million “Taking Shape, Our Triangle” initiative, which is focused on building hundreds of affordable homes in downtown Madison.

City officials approached Madison College to involve students in the redevelopment effort. Perez described the experience as significant for his career development. “This was an incredible opportunity to work in the field with city engineers and architects,” he said.

Perez worked on the project over six months while continuing his full-time studies. He used software common among architects and engineers and built the 3D model at Madison College’s STEM Center, where students have access to technology such as 3D printers and a Glow Forge machine.

Faculty members Dr. Kit Carlson and Tom Fleming from the STEM Center served as advisors throughout the process. Dr. Carlson commented, “He was committed to making this piece remarkable, giving back to the city he grew up in.”

The completed model was unveiled at a groundbreaking ceremony on August 13. Heather Stouder from the City of Madison Department of Planning & Community & Economic Development noted Perez’s contributions: “My favorite part was seeing him interact with CDA Triangle residents, elected officials, and others, using the model to help everyone gain a better understanding of this major multi-year project to significantly improve and expand affordable housing in this part of Madison's downtown.”

Reflecting on his involvement, Perez expressed appreciation for those who supported him: “I am grateful for this opportunity and thank the City of Madison, and all the support I received from Madison College faculty and staff, and the valuable resources from the STEM Center.”
