The Ad Hoc State Street Campus Garage/Hawthorne Court Public Art Committee and the Madison Arts Commission have announced a call for artists to submit proposals for a new public art project at the State Street Campus Garage, located at 415 N. Lake Street. The deadline for applications is set for 2:00pm on Thursday, September 25, 2025.

The garage is part of a redevelopment project that features mixed uses, including an intercity bus terminal, public parking facilities, and private student housing. The Percent for Art initiative will focus on enhancing public spaces in the facility such as the bus terminal and parking garage, as well as Hawthorne Court.

According to the committee, “The site serves as a major transportation hub for residents and tourists visiting the State Street pedestrian corridor, the University of Wisconsin-Madison, the State Capitol, the Kohl Center, and more. This project provides an opportunity for a site-specific public artwork that creates a vibrant and welcoming environment, affirms the cultural significance of the area, and celebrates what makes Madison unique.”

Artists are asked to design works that are vibrant and utilize or interact with light—either through self-illumination or by leveraging natural or existing lighting conditions. The artwork should engage viewers both up close and from afar while making the site more visually appealing and inviting to pedestrians.

Additional information about this project can be found through City of Madison resources (https://www.cityofmadison.com/).
